Putting Horse-Racing Fatalities In Perspective

There was a time when humans and animals lived alongside each other. Humans and animals were friends and partners in everything that they did. Unfortunately, today, we only refer to one animal is man’s best friend, even though many years ago, it was every animal. In today’s world, there are very few numbers of people who are close to animals. Farmers rear cattle, so they are close to these animals. Some people have pets – dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, and so many more. Another form in which humans are close to animals is human interaction with the horses, in specific, horse-racing.

Animals are all around us. We see birds flying in the air, dogs running about backyards, frogs jumping around ponds every once in a while. Animals are all around us, and we humans are quite fascinated by it. Why do people go on jungle safaris? Why do people like going camping and staying in cabins? In simple words, humans feel an interconnectedness to other life forms, which includes animals. This is the reason why we are so eager to see all the animals when we go to forests and for treks. Of course, they can be scary, but they are part of nature, as are we. Hence, it is natural to want to be close to animals. This can also be the reason for people keeping pet animals at home.

Fatalities in the horse racing world refer to when a racing horse, who was bred and born just for racing, is put down after inabilities show of it on the racecourse. For many years now, we find breeders of many different animals. Dog breeders, cat breeders, racing horse breeders, etc. are not uncommon. Pet animal breeders are part of the business to provide a pet to the people who want one. They consider it a business transaction – they exchange an animal for a few dollars.

Similarly, when it comes to racing horses, the purpose of breeding them is different. Racing horses are bred and reared in such a way that they are fully equipped and trained to become racing horses to put on racetracks. The sole purpose of their lives goes into racing for humans. This is the reason why they are born in the first place. So, when they become weak and unable to race anymore, they are put down.

How Are Racing Horses Deaths Different From Other Animals?

There is no question that the death of one animal is less or more painful than the end of another animal. To say that would be to discriminate between the animals, which is not alright. Most often, when shelter dogs and other animals are put down, we do not see the realities of it. All we know is that the animal became old and could not support itself anymore. Putting a shelter animal out of its misery and pain is not something that people see much wrong with. However, people see racing horse deaths with much more hurt. This is because when these horses, whose sole purpose is to race, break down amidst a competition, everyone there sees it. The horse’s objective has been achieved, and now everyone knows that it is going to die. Hence, it hits people harder than would any death that they did not witness before their own eyes.
