GT Bicycles is a bicycle manufacturer that specializes in BMX, mountain, and road bikes. GT is owned by Dorel Industries, a Canadian company that offers Asian-made Cannondale, Schwinn, Mongoose, IronHorse, DYNO, and RoadMaster bicycles.
GT did found in 1972 by Gary Turner also Richard Long in Santa Ana, California, and was known at the time for establishing the popularity of BMX bicycles, later for developing a variety of bikes based on its “triple triangle” design, and finally for winning a commission to build a $30,000 carbon fiber “Superbike” for the 1996 Summer Olympics. GT sponsored several race teams and individuals, including well-known racers Rebecca Twigg and Juli Furtado.
In 1998, the company became public, and in 1999, it merged with Questor Partners, the corporation that owned Schwinn. The company died bankrupt in 2001 and was purchased out by Pacific Cycle, which was eventually taken out by Dorel Industries in 2004.
Groundbreaking BMX designs
GT is noted for their groundbreaking BMX designs and their “triple triangle” hard-tail mountain bike frame design, which includes a seat parallel to the downtube and links the top tube aft of the rear tube rather than directly at the seat tube. The company typically uses a frame design. The bike’s complete line extends back past the seat tube, presumably to reduce vibration transfer from the rear wheel to the seat. Later models would have “GT” stamped on the end of the larger top box.
In 1980, GT Bicycles Inc. released their first bike, the “GT Pro,” and sponsored BMX racers like Lee Medlin and Denny Davidow. The first publication advertisement for GT came in Bicycle Motocross Action in January 1980. (BMX Action).
For the 1981 season, GT provided five models: Junior, Expert, 24, 26, and Pro. Until 1984, when they introduced the Performer, their first freestyle bike, the motorcycles remained unchanged.
In 1983, Bob Morales and Eddie Fiola, two freestyle BMX racers, are hired by GT to design and ride the Performer, a groundbreaking freestyle bike. The Performer was the single dedicated freestyle bike available, aside from the Haro Freestyler. The characteristic bent down tube was a game-changer in terms of design and marketing for GT. It developed a signature image for the company. Until his contract did not renew in 1987, Eddie Fiola undoubtedly displayed the various famous and popular BMX personalities of the 1980s. Bob Morales subsequently left GT to concentrate on his firm, DYNO Designs. On the other hand, Eddie Fiola became possibly the most well-known and popular BMX figure of the 1980s until his lease was not renewed in 1987.
