“About Car Racing” is a terrific documentary from Gas Station Films that covers the important parts of car racing and gives an inside look at what it’s all about. The film can be purchased in DVD format from most any online video store or from your local rental place.
I’ve seen “About Car Racing” several times, and I think the racers documentary may be the best feature of the film that I’ve seen. The documentary has been professionally made, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not available for free viewing online.
About Car Racing
I came across the film while searching for information on “Petrolhead” over the internet. As a petrolhead, I was searching for some cool websites to check out to see how I could improve my overall knowledge of the subject. And, after all the sites that I had visited, I stumbled upon “About Car Racing.”
The story behind “About Car Racing” is amazing. After receiving funding to make the film, Gas Station Films felt that the film lacked something to help explain the workings of racing better.
They wanted to give the viewer a more detailed insight into the subject of auto racing and how it’s automotive field has evolved through the years. They also wanted to teach the viewers about the motorsports, technology, and the fan bases of various automobile races. So, Gas Station Films started making a series of videos with the idea of making a documentary for airtime on specific events of specific racing teams, drivers and fans.
The production crew soon realized that they didn’t have the talent, money, and time to make a full-length feature documentary film that focused on a certain aspect of car racing. So, the series of short documentaries and featurettes were created. There are three documentaries available on YouTube.
Acing The Phoenix
The first one was “Racing the Phoenix,” which is about the creation of the first “virtual” race track, the one that’s used for Formula E racing. It features some of the stars of the racing teams as well as former F1 racers like Niki Lauda. Lauda and many other stars in the sports world know how big a deal Formula E has become.
Racing The Nürburgring
The second one is “Racing the Nürburgring,” which focuses on the professional racing circuits in Germany and Austria and how their racing teams compete against each other. This is a very good documentary about the grand tour auto racing circuit in Germany. The documentary includes interviews with drivers from Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Nissan, Renault, Porsche, and many more.
“Racing the Suzuka Circuit” is the final racing documentary that the team produced for the series. This one features the legendary Formula 1 racer Niki Lauda, as well as cars and drivers from all the major racing teams. You’ll also hear about the crazy schedules of the professional racing teams.
I like the fact that “Gas Station Films” seems to be coming up with some new ideas for each season and always goes back to the “when will they make a movie about…” mantra. You’ll be hearing a lot about this series for a long time to come.
Bottom Line: About Car Racing
In the future, we’ll probably have more opportunities to watch one of these movies if the industry learns to make a real product that stands up to public scrutiny. While “About Car Racing” is a good movie, it does lack some information in the technical and racing aspects of racing. But, that’s not an insurmountable problem. It’s just a minor one.
The future of real car racing is very bright indeed. The industry is moving at a fast pace, and that’s why I’m a fan of the “about car racing” series. That’s a pretty good endorsement of its quality as a racing documentary.
